Pierced and Chiseled Italian Parade Halberd

Large proportions overall, with long crescentic axe blade and down-curved beak; finely pierced and chiseled with monster heads and floral decoration. Above and below the blade is a knob composed of six sprung-in chiseled grotesque masks of the style typical of fine late 16th century Italian polearms.

At right angles to the blade is a 2 1/4” diamond-section side spike on each side. Hollow-ground 21 1/2” diamond-section spike with floral engraved base and stamped maker’s mark. Length of metal 47”; overall 104”.

Tapering octagonal ferrule, chiseled en-suite, with integral side straps; mounted on antique octagonal wood shaft with iron nails and grotesque-head tacks, featuring gold textile tassel. Excellent condition with smooth metal and crisp chiseling.
